This curriculum was proposed in June 2021 as an option for K-5 to add social justice / anti-racism lessons to the ELA curriculum. It was voted down, but the newly formed task force is determining what to do with it.
Floyd’s death and subsequent social unrest was used by WCSD’s Superintendent and Board of Trustees as the catalyst to prioritize equity over education in WCSD. On May 31, 2020, a letter was sent to the WCSD educators in how to handle classroom discussions around matters involving George Floyd.
The Equity and Diversity Department facilitates 15 hours of Professional Learning around Cultural Competency for central office departments. The sessions are designed to include, but not be limited to, concepts of Culturally Responsive Practices, Equity, Implicit Bias, Disproportionality, Barriers, Privilege, and Entitlement.
